The Payment Card Industry consists of five major credit card brands:

Each of these five companies initially created their own series of rules and restrictions for storing and using credit card details. This led to a number of problems for third party payment providers as there were differences between each set of rules.

This prompted the PCI companies to come together to form a single Standard for processing and storing card information. If PCI Compliance is confirmed for an individual payment provider, that company can assure their clients that its credit card data/account information and transaction information is safe from hackers or any malicious system intrusion.
